Back at It

Workout:  3 miles followed by a jump in the pool!!

I just started a 5 week training program called The Ultimate 5K Training Plan.  It is from Runner's World, and it is the same program I used last October/November.  I LOVE this plan.  This dude's philosophy is no tempo runs.  Lots of speed work with very short recovery - "uncomfortably short" as he puts it.  Worked for me in the fall so I'm giving it another go!

The problem I am having is doing speed work in the heat.  I am definitely not complaining about the heat...I just don't know how to avoid it.  I have two options:

1.  Wake up early.  My husband leaves for work at 5:45 which means I would have to be out the door no later than 5 a.m. for speed work.  I don't mind waking up early, but I do mind the pitch black streets!!!  Even though I live in a gated community I still freak out about strangers hiding in the bushes.  Seriously, I do!!  It HAS to be light out when I run if I am by myself.  Or I need to go buy some pepper spray.
This is 7 a.m. folks!!  No way am I running!!

2.  Run in the evening.  Well, anyone with kids knows this extremely difficult.  Dinner, homework, bath, bedtime.  By the time the kids are in bed I'm exhausted!!!  The last thing I want to do is workout.  Plus, the evenings are the only time I get to spend with my husband, and I'm not willing to give that time up.
And I don't know how many times Matt or I have fallen asleep while laying with the kids.  Does this happen to anyone else??

3.  I know I said I have two options, but really I have three.  Run in the heat.  4:30-5:00 - seriously the HOTTEST part of the day!  So this option isn't avoiding the heat, but dealing with the heat.  I've only done one speed session so far and it was awful!!  No joke, but my feet felt like they were on fire.   It was also one of those runs where you are still sweating even AFTER you take a shower.  Yuck!!

First speed workout done!  It was tough, and I was so happy to be done with it.  I could barely move my legs the last minute of my run.  The combination of heat and being out of shape totally kicked my butt.  But getting back at it felt oh so good!!

Workout:  8 miles/1:25:02 It takes 9 months to put the weight on, and it took 9 months and 6 days to get the weight off.  FINALLY!!!!!!  I am at my pre-Orlando weight.  I gained 40 whopping pounds during my second pregnancy, and I am ecstatic to say that I have now lost 41.  I worked extremely hard to get that darn baby weight off, and there were several times I didn't think I was going to be able to do it.  Thankfully, my determination won in the end.  I have expressed before on my blog that I am not a healthy eater.  Junk food is my good friend, and fruits and veggies are evil gross!! (Okay, not ALL fruits, but pretty much ALL veggies are evil.) So how did I do it?  I cut out a lot of carbs.  Not completely, but I closely monitored my carb intake.  I limited my Coke and McDonald's Sweet Tea splurges and tried to drink these sugary beverages only on weekends.  I discovered Crystal Light Pink Lemonade which I drink during th...

Setting Goals

I'm always setting goals for myself.  Running goals, nutritional goals, cleaning goals, etc. (That last one is always a challenge.)  I set goals so I have something to work towards; an everyday challenge to conquer.  A couple of weeks ago I thought about what type of new goals I wanted to make.  I started by thinking of a running goal.  I needed something that would be challenging, yet achievable.  I decided I would challenge myself by trying to run at least 20 miles a week. Next, I wanted to set some nutritional goals.  Anyone close to me knows that I eat like crap.  Total crap!  In fact, I honestly can not remember the last time I had a piece of fruit.  I have just a few more pounds of baby weight to lose and I know eating better would definitely get it off.  So I set a goal to make wiser food choices and cut back on my snacking.  But late in the week I discovered a couple things about my goals. The first is, don't make ru...

A little mommy rant!

Workout: HIIT download/2mile run Okay moms, I hate being bombarded in every parent's magazine and internet article about all these super star moms.  You know, the moms  that feed their kids organic food, only let their children play educational games, and make their two year old do service projects. You can judge and put your nose up in the air about me, but that is totally okay, because I judge you, too!!!   Seriously, I want to throw my greasy hamburger in their face and tell them to shove it.  My kids are awesome, healthy, happy, and enjoy life.  And I enjoy the things I do being their mom.  It is totally okay to: 1.   let my kids eat McDonald's french fries.  2.   let my children watch cartoons....right smack dab in front of the t.v.  3.  Allow them to drink  a late night polar pop!!  I believe this is Dr. Pepper. 4.  iPad games instead of story time at bed!! I don't care that these things...
